Note: Answer all questions. Kindly note that answers for 10 marks questions should be approximately of 400 words. Each question is followed by evaluation scheme.

1 An organization can have various benefits from having an efficient Quality Management System. Explain the need of Quality Management Systems in an organization. List the advantages of Quality Management Systems.

Answer. A quality management system (QMS) defines and establishes an organization’s quality policy and objectives. It also allows an organization to document and implement the procedures needed to attain these goals. A properly functioning QMS ensures that procedures are carried out consistently, that problems can be identified and resolved, and that the organization can continuously review and improve its procedures, products and services. It is a mechanism for maintaining and improving the quality of products or services so that they consistently meet or exceed the customer’s implied or stated needs and fulfill their quality objectives.

ISO 9001, Quality management systems – Requirements, outlines the essential characteristics of an ISO 9000 quality management system.

2 QFD is a customer driven planning process which guides through the design, manufacture and marketing of a product or service. Explain the Approaches and Phases of Quality Function Deployment (QFD).

Answer. Quality function deployment (QFD) is a “method to transform qualitative user demands into quantitative parameters, to deploy the functions forming quality, and to deploy methods for achieving the design quality into subsystems and component parts, and ultimately to specific elements of the manufacturing process.”

There are several approaches to QFD; each of these approaches makes use of matrices to organize and relate pieces of data to each other.  Many times these matrices are combined to form a basic QFD tool called a “House of Quality”.

The basic approach used here is conceptually similar to the practice followed by most American manufacturing companies. In QFD we typically follow the flow as defined in Figure 7-2.  We start with customer requirements, which may be loosely stated qualitative items such as: looks good, easy to use, works well, feels good, safe, comfortable

3 a) Reliability engineering is concerned with four key elements. Discuss.

Answer. Reliability engineering is engineering that emphasizes dependability in the lifecycle management of a product. Dependability, or reliability, describes the ability of a system or component to function under stated conditions for a specified period of time.[1] Reliability engineering is a sub-discipline within systems engineering. Reliability is theoretically defined as the probability of failure, the frequency of failures, or in terms of availability, a probability derived from reliability and maintainability. Maintainability and maintenance may be defined as a part of reliability engineering. Reliability plays a key role in

4 Describe Robust Design Optimisation Strategy. Explain the steps followed in Robust Parameter Design.

Answer. The concept of robust design was pioneered by Dr. Genichi Taguchi in order to improve engineering productivity and the quality of manufactured goods. This approach to controls and design engineering incorporates innovative statistical analysis as well as new approaches to the design of experiments. The difference in the Taguchi method heavily relies on cost analysis of the product in the field, where it will ultimately be used, and the effect it will have on the consumer to increase end product satisfaction. Robust design itself focuses on improving the fundamental function of the product or process, thereby

5 Quality Control Charts focuses on the stability of a process and demonstrates the performance of a project over time. Explain the basic components of quality control charts. Describe the benefits and drawbacks of quality control charts.

Answer. Control charts have two general uses in an improvement project. The most common application is as a tool to monitor process stability and control. A less common, although some might argue more powerful, use of control charts is as an analysis tool. The descriptions below provide an overview of the different types of control charts to help practitioners identify the best chart for any monitoring situation, followed by a description of the method for using control charts for analysis.

6 What is business excellence? What are the steps involved in achieving organisational excellence?

Answer. There are a number of ways to define what organisational excellence means in the plant maintenance world. But a common factor is alignment around mutual goals and processes. It’s important to have a workforce that is dedicated to productivity and further knowledge attainment. In addition, at exceptional organisations, skill-based performance is rewarded with career progression and success, and performance results benefit stakeholders and employees alike.

Here are five steps to get you started on the path to
