Answer the following questions:

  1. 1- Trace the origin of Political science. Discuss how politics is different from political science. [10 Marks]

Answer:Political science as a separate field is a rather late arrival in terms of social sciences. However, the term “political science” was not always distinguished from political philosophy, and the modern discipline has a clear set of antecedents including also moral philosophy, political economy, political theology, history, and other fields concerned with normative determinations of what ought to be and with deducing the characteristics and functions of the ideal state.

Modern writers make a distinction between “politics “and “political Science” Sir Frederic Pollock, for the first time, breaks up the subject into two parts, viz (

  1. 2- Is the study of political science important? How? Validate your argument with references to the utility of political science and the scope of political science. [10 Marks]

Answer:Political science is a social science discipline that deals with systems of government and the analysis of political activity and political behavior. It deals extensively with the theory and practice of politics which is commonly thought of as the determining of the distribution of power and resources. Political scientists “see themselves engaged in revealing the relationships underlying political events and conditions, and from these revelations they attempt to construct general principles about the way the world of politics works.”

Political science draws upon the fields of economics, law, sociology, history, anthropology, public administration, public policy, national politics, international relations, comparative politics, psychology, political organization, and political theory. Although it was codified in the 19th century, when all the social sciences were established, the stud

  1. 3- What is the state? Describe the elements of state and the difference between state and society. [10 Marks]

Answer:A state is an entity that occupies a definite geographic area, has a certain culture, people, language history and the like. The term state is used to distinguish a certain territory from another one based on these factors. It is an independent and sovereign entity that can be distinguished from the other states and has certain administrative tasks to be carried out for its proper functioning. These administrative tasks are carried out by the government. This entity has the right to exercise power over the territory and the people. State is the territory in

  1. 4- Differentiate between the concepts of anarchism, totalitarianism, and pluralism. [10 Marks]

Answer:The anarchism which developed among such men was compatible with the exercise of authority and coercion, processes without which no large-scale social reconstruction could be effected. This should occasion no surprise, since the example of the primitive anarchies shows that authority and coercion are not to be identified exclusively with the State. What the Spanish anarchists aimed at was the abolition of the State and certain forms of activity upheld by State power (lawyer, moneylender, landlord, for example), which entailed driving out, and keeping out, representatives of the State, and instituting new social

  1. 5- Write a long note on Gandhism and Marxism. [10 Marks]

Answer:The poverty problem in both the systems lies in lo-caring the poor vis-a-vis the privileged seats of power and wealth, and in an ongoing struggle for power to the poor. This gives a Marxo-Gandhian idea of social change. Two such experiments took place after Gandhi-the Maoist civil war in China of the Marxian variety and the J.P. Civil movement of the Gandhian variety, both against the coercive state. Unfortunately both the movements faded into a hunt for political power. China, however, got an advantage of an equalised economic

  1. 6- Describe the characteristics and importance of ideologies. [10 Marks]

Answer:The word first made its appearance in French as idéologie at the time of the French Revolution, when it was introduced by a philosopher, A.-L.-C. Destutt de Tracy, as a short name for what he called his “science of ideas,” which he claimed to have adapted from the epistemology of the philosophers John Locke and Étienne Bonnot de Condillac, for whom all human knowledge was knowledge of ideas.  The fact is, however, that he owed rather more to the English philosopher Francis Bacon, whom he revered no less than
