(FALL 2014) ASSIGNMENT
PROGRAM | BCA (Revised Fall 2012) |
SEMESTER | 2 |
SUBJECT CODE & NAME | BCA2050 COMPUTER ORGANIZATION |
CREDIT | 2 |
BK ID | B1642 |
MAX.MARKS | 60 |
Note: Answer all questions. Kindly note that answers for 10 marks questions should be approximately of 400 words. Each question is followed by evaluation scheme.
1.What is difference engine? Briefly explain the structure of Babbage’s Difference Engine.
Answer : A difference engine is an automatic mechanical calculator designed to tabulate polynomial functions. The name derives from the method of divided differences, a way to interpolate or tabulate functions by using a small set of polynomial coefficients.
Charles Babbage (1791-1871), computer pioneer, designed two classes of engine, Difference Engines, and Analytical Engines. Difference engines are so called because of the mathematical principle on which they are based, namely, the method of finite differences. The beauty of the method is that it uses only arithmetical addition and removes the need for multiplication and division which are more difficult to
2 .What is the difference between fixed and floating point numbers?
Answer : Fixed point.
Numerical system in computer can be separated into 2 group , one is Floating point and another one is Fixed point. Floating point is mainly
used in calculation of software that run on PC. In PC there is the FPU or Floating Point Unit so it is possible to use floating point numerical system.
On the other hand , in embedded system , the capability of main processor is limit and maybe there’s no FPU so in calculation , the usablility of
- List the fundamental design issues in designing an instruction set.
Answer : The design of instruction sets is a complex issue. There were two stages in history for the microprocessor. The first was the CISC (Complex Instruction Set Computer), which had many different instructions. In the 1970s, however, places like IBM did research and found that many instructions in the set could be eliminated. The result was the RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computer), an architecture that uses a smaller set of instructions. A simpler instruction set may offer the potential for higher speeds, reduced processor size, and reduced power consumption. However, a more complex set may optimize common
- Write a note on: Indirect Cycle and Interrupt cycle.
Answer : The Indirect Cycle
Once an instruction is fetched, the next step is to fetch source operands. Continuing our simple example, let us assume a one-address instruction format, with direct and indirect addressing allowed. If the instruction specifies an indirect address, then an indirect cycle must precede the execute cycle. The data flow includes the following micro-operations:
t1: MAR <= (IR (Address))
t2: MBR <= Memory
- Briefly explain the types of Random-Access Memory and ROM.
Answer : There are two basic types of RAM :
(i) Dynamic Ram
(ii) Static RAM
Dynamic RAM : loses its stored information in a very short time (for milli sec.) even when power supply is on. D-RAM’s are cheaper & lower.
Similar to a microprocessor chip is an Integrated Circuit (IC) made of millions of transistors and capacitors.
In the most common form of computer memory,
